Dr Rosalind Galt (Sussex University) and Dr Karl Schoonover (University of Warwick) will be leading a presentation – including a number of film clips – on the theme of ‘The New Global Queer Cinema’ at Cornerhouse on Thursday 23rd May, 5.30pm. The event is free; however, booking is required.
We are excited to welcome Dr Rosalind Galt and Dr Karl Schoonover to the Sexuality Summer School. Highly respected film scholars in their own right, together they have co-edited the recent collection Global Art Cinema: New Theories and Histories (Oxford University Press, 2012). This fantastic book re-conceptualises the category of ‘art cinema’ in the era of ‘globalisation’ and ‘world cinema.’
This presentation will be followed by a screening of the film Circumstance (2011), directed by Maryam Keshavarz. The screening will begin at 6.40pm. Tickets for the film: £7.50 (£5.50).
The winner of the 2011 Sundance Audience Award, Circumstance is set in contemporary Iran in the unseen world of Iranian youth culture, filled with underground parties, sex, drugs and defiance. It is the story of two vivacious young women – wealthy Atafeh and orphaned Shireen – discovering their burgeoning sexuality, and struggling with their desires and the boundaries placed upon them by the world they were born into.
