Since 2008, the Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture (CSSC) at the University of Manchester has organised the annual Sexuality Summer School (SSS). Bringing postgraduates and international scholars together with performers and activists, the SSS facilitates a week of discussions on contemporary debates in queer and feminist sexuality studies, with a clear emphasis on the interdisciplinary study of culture. The postgraduate workshops and seminars are accompanied by a series of public events in Manchester, including film screenings, performances and lectures, organised by the Summer School team.

In the 2017 SSS, we shall ask ‘Why Be Normal?’ and focus on norms, normativities, anti-normativities and the history of the normal in queer and feminist debates on sexuality and beyond. Daytime workshops for SSS students will be accompanied by public events open to all. Tickets for screenings and performances will be purchasable online through the venues.

This year our funders and partners so far include: the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership, artsmethods@manchester, the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, the Women’s Media Studies Network, HOME, the People’s History Museum and the Macmillan LGBT Cancer Support Alliance.

Registration for the Sexuality Summer School is open to all postgraduate taught and research students (Masters and PhD) involved in the study of sexuality. Registration goes live on 1st March at estore.manchester.ac.uk.

The registration fee is £130, which includes the cost of tickets to the public events. The number of places is limited to 40 so book early to avoid disappointment!
