Sexuality Summer School 2022: The Desire for Identity

The Sexuality Summer School is a week-long event comprised of a series of workshops for 40 postgraduate students, alongside a public arts events programme open to all.

Opening Public Lecture: ‘Indigestion: Transsexuality and the Queer Aversion to Identity’

This event will be in person with Kadji Amin joining us via videolink.

While feminist and queer debates have radically opened up the ways in which we think about identity, debates in trans studies often emphasise the vitality and political urgency identities may offer. This talk from Kadji Amin looks across these dialogues to ask how trans challenges some of the assumptions underwriting the urge to queer identity.

Screening of Rebel Dykes (2021)

Join us for a screening of Rebel Dykes, a raucous documentary using animation, interviews and archival footage to explore the story of a group of women who met in 1980s post-punk London doing art, music, politics and sex, and how they went on to change their world.

Public Event 3: Tuesday, 24 May, 6pm
Public Performance Lecture: ‘Category Mistake’, mandla rae (Manchester-based poet, producer, programmer, facilitator and theatre maker)
Venue: International Anthony Burgess Foundation, 3 Cambridge Street, Manchester, M1 5BY
Join us for a performance lecture in which mandla rae tells the story of the experience of being a ‘category mistake’ – an identity that society does not want to admit exists.
mandla is a queer Zimbabwean-born, Manchester-based practitioner who examines the notion of identity and its regulation on the body to explore possibilities of resistance through a performance practice of embodied movement, gesture, and spoken word.

Public Event 4: Wednesday 25 May, 7pm
Performace: Essi Rossi – Ejaculation Falls
Venue: STUNLIVE, 335 Stretford Road, Hulme, M15 5ZA
The word ejaculation means both sexual climax and a sudden, emotional burst of words, a desire to be heard. Ejaculation Falls is a performance where a group of people gather together to celebrate sexual diversity. It is an opportunity to share things regarding sex and sexuality that are often hidden or silenced in public conversations. The performance leads its viewers to the other side of norms and collective beliefs. It invites us to examine sexuality’s power and various dimensions, to give new words to the ways in which we talk about sex.
